durata un anno e mezzo ha fatto s\u00ec che prima si creasse un'isola (Ilha nova) e poi si riempisse il vuoto, aggiungendo a Faial, nella parte sud-occidentale, altri 2,4 km quadrati di terra desolata. \u00c8 un <a href=\"https:\/\/guidetotheazores.pt\/it\/capelinhos-il-vulcano-che-non-cera\/\">sito affascinante da visitare<\/a> e ha un centro di interpretazione costruito nell'area, con pi\u00f9 belle del mondo.<\/p><\/div><p>La \"Caldeira\" \u00e8 in realt\u00e0 la cima crollata del Cabe\u00e7o Gordo (letteralmente \"testa grassa\"), un vulcano di 1000 metri esploso circa 1000 anni fa. \u00c8 larga 2 km e profonda 400 metri. Oltre alla magnifica vista dal crinale, \u00e8 possibile camminare intorno alla caldera (8 km - facile) o scendere nella caldera stessa, ma per farlo \u00e8 necessaria una guida autorizzata (per turisti, per la posizione spettacolare e i servizi offerti. \u00c8 sorvegliata (in estate), dispone di docce e servizi igienici, e c'\u00e8 un \"bar sulla spiaggia\" e due ristoranti a pochi passi.<\/p><p>Faial \u00e8 da considerarsi la migliore isola delle Azzorre per le spiagge, in quanto \u00e8 l'unica ad averne molte, sia di sabbia bianca che nera.  <\/p><hr><p> Alcune di esse sono piuttosto grandi e su di esse sono sorti villaggi grazie al clima pi\u00f9 mite, alla posizione riparata e alle possibilit\u00e0 agricole. La Faj\u00e3 da Caldeira do Santo Cristo \u00e8 una delle pi\u00f9 famose, costituita in realt\u00e0 da due faj\u00e3 distinte, collegate da un sentiero che \u00e8 una bella escursione da fare. Oltre a questo, c'\u00e8 un faro ben conservato (operativo, non aperto al pubblico) e un'antica Vigia da Baleias (capanno per l'avvistamento delle balene) restaurata, che un tempo serviva ai balenieri per - avete indovinato - avvistare le balene di passaggio a scopo di caccia.
