Description

Discover the fascinating circular route in the Caldeira de Guilherme Moniz, a protected geological area (similar to the famous Algar do Carvão volcanic cave) on Terceira Island full of Macaronesian forests and peatlands that support the aquifers of this 23,000-year-old volcanic complex! The trail begins near the parking lot, taking you through ancient lava fields and trails carved by the ox carts that once fetched wood from the caldera. Continue through stunning landscapes, passing through a cedar forest and catching glimpses of the Cinco Picos Volcano, the largest caldera in the Azores.

We ended our tour with a visit to the regional products market with a cheese tasting, at Quinta dos Açores

After leaving the lodge, the guide takes all travelers to the desired trail. There are several options:

1. Rocha do Chambre Walking Trail: Get to know a large part of the island’s interior by walking along one of Terceira’s most important volcanoes. It is classified as being of medium difficulty, with a length of 8.8 km and an average duration of 3.5 hours.

2. Black Mysteries Walking Trail: Walk alongside various endemic species, visit small lagoons and walk on lava. All this is possible on the Mistérios Negros trail, classified as difficult, which is 4.9 km long and takes around 3.5 hours.

3. Baías da Agualva: A mostly sea-facing trail, it runs along the coast of the village of Agualva, observing volcanic formations and endemic species such as the Erica Azorica. It is classified as easy, with a length of 3.8 km and an average duration of 3 hours.

4. Forts of São Sebastião: A walking trail that passes by several fortifications that predate the Spanish invasions of Terceira Island, a real walk through history! It is classified as easy, with a length of 5.7 km (3.54 miles) and an average duration of 3.5 hours.

5. Serreta: This is a circular trail with a length of 6.8 km, the average completion time is around 3.5 hours. On this route you can see traces of volcanic activity and endemic species.

6. Crossbows: This is a circular trail, 4 km long, with an average running time of around 3 hours. On this trail you can see imprints of the old ox cart paths known as Passagem das Bestas, as well as various endemic species.

7. Monte Brasil: This is a circular trail with a length of 7.4 km and an average completion time of around 3.5 hours. This trail runs along Monte Brasil, surrounded by a Spanish fortress. You can see several species of endemic plants.

The guide will drop all visitors off at their chosen accommodation after the tour.
