Hiking around the Caldeira is an experience you should not miss out if you visit Faial. This collapsed volcanic cone is one of the main landmarks of Faial. With 2 km in diameter it is an impressive reminder of the force of nature. The trail around the perimeter is about 7 km long and can be done in two to three hours. The hike around the Caldeira is physically easy, but those suffering from vertigo might find a couple of well secured passages a bit of a challenge. This hike is only worthwhile to be done if the weather is clear and the wind is not too strong.
